a language unknown

We speak a language unknown to everybody else

And fluently you have shown me how to talk to myself

And I don’t know where I’d be without your voice in my ear

So please keep talking to me and just stay near me tonight

I think you live in my songs you wake up at the first note

And then you start in my lungs and you travel up my throat

By the time you reach my tongue you are still warm and wet and held

And then you pass through my lips, the world hears parts of what I felt, for you.

Sometimes I hum instead of sing, let my guitar fill the space

The words just come out all wrong when they can’t see your face

I sometimes cry instead of hum and beg the world for you

But at the end of each song that’s one more night that I got through, alone

Now our topics have all changed and we are learning all new words

Letting go of pronouns and focusing on verbs

The things you do are what count so let’s do and so them well

And when I sing to you now your name is all that I can spell, out loud.

Cause we speak a language unknown to everybody else

And fluently you have shown me how to talk to myself

And I don’t know where I’d be without your voice in my ear

So please keep talking to me and just stay near me tonight
